My Philanthropic Journey: Earning the President's Action Award and Living Coretta Scott King's Legacy

The role of philanthropy has never been more vital, and for me, it's a deeply personal journey. I've always believed, as Coretta Scott King once said, "The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." This quote resonates with me because philanthropy isn't just about financial donations; it's about giving your time, talent, and energy to build a stronger community.
In the Greater Houston Area, the spirit of giving is strong, but there’s always more to be done. We have a rich history of service, and I believe we have an opportunity to make an even greater impact, particularly within the Black American community. For so long, we have often been the beneficiaries of charity rather than the givers. By intentionally stepping into philanthropic roles, we can redefine this narrative and show the diversity of generosity that has always been a part of our heritage.
I’m humbled to share a personal accomplishment that embodies this commitment. Over the last eight years, I've documented 4,214 hours of volunteering. This is a testament to the power of showing up for the organizations that have been a blessing to me and my daughter, including Girl Scouts, Awty International School, Lamar High School, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority (Lambda Omega Sigma Alumnae Chapter), NPHC, Inc. - Houston, NPHC, Inc. - North Houston, and NCL, Inc. - Post Oak Chapter. I am also honored to be a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement level of the President's Action Award, which is the equivalent of the President's Volunteer Service Award.
As Coretta Scott King also said, "Struggle is a never-ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation." For me, being a philanthropist is part of this ongoing struggle—it’s about intentionally choosing to be a blessing to others, one hour, one act, and one helping hand at a time.
